Top 5 grocery stores in NYC that are not chains

It’s so NOT New York to shop in a supermarket chain

So here are The Cooking Junket’s favourite supermarket chain-free destinations for travellers heading to NYC

If you are a supermarket chain kind of foodie – check out our Top 5 supermarket chains in NYC here

LOVE Italian food?
This my dear is the best place for the full-blown Italian experience outside of Italy

Celeb chef Mario Bartoli plays a hand in this iconic NYC Italian food hub – go for pizza, pasta, nutella and all things Italian. In the heart of Mid-town – forget the long line at Shake Shack Madison Sq and head to Eataly

Chelsea Markets

Love Food Network? Can’t get enough of Rachel Ray… and all her foodie friends on the telly?

Well, head straight to Chelsea Food Market near the Meatpacking district

A little small and definitely not a place to spend a day or more than 2 hours – but if you love to meander through foodie places – this is the spot

Urban foodie market meats gourmet brands under the one roof. Stop and walk around the HighLine for a truly NY experience after or pre-Chelsea Markets visit

The Plaza Food Hall

If you’re sick of walking around Central Park and need some gourmet food – head to The Plaza Food Hall

Located near Central Park – this is where Home Alone was filmed – and is also home to the great food hall

Gourmet food and gourmet prices to match – but great for a very NYC experience with rich parents

Gansevoort Market

A relatively new-comer to the Food Hall market scene in NYC

But with over 24 different venders it has to make the list. It’s a great spot – even though it’s really tight and not much seating – but hey you are a New Yorker – you don’t have time to sit and eat – you gotta move it with the locals baby!

Venders like Tacombi and also Donostia are here – so it’s a great place for hybrid pastries – thai foods and a yogurt bar…. eat till you bust baby!

Not really a food market but a place to stuff your face

Gotham West Market

Gotham West Market has only 9 venders but it’s worth it because Ivan Ramen Slurp Shop is here – otherwise, the usual suspects for foodie lovers and a coffee spot by Blue Bottle.

It’s open pretty late and has The Cannibal El Colmado to rock your NY night away

Alright – there are LOTS of other great markets like Anthony Bourdains much anticipated opening and also Berg’n… but it’s a top 5 list …. and there are only 5
